Barrington Bloomers African Violet Society - Sharing and growing african violets in northwest Chicagoland.
Reporting from Raleigh AVSA 2010 Convention

Thought it made more sense to start a new page for posts and photos from the convention.

April 23, 2010
Now that everyone has been back home from the convention in Raleigh for several days now, it only makes sense to bring this page to an end and return to posting on the blog 2010 page (tab on the left).  When I do finally download all the photos from my digital camera rather than my Iphone, I may try tackling the task of slotting images into the list of award winners posted here below.  I'll be sure and let folks know when I accomplish all that image resizing for the web.

It seems appropriate however, to end the posts on the 2010 convention page by telling you that in the seven days from Tuesday, April 13th to Monday, April 19th a total
of 10,207 visitors checked out this website and the reports from Raleigh.

At the installation dinner, they read aloud over 40 names of AVSA members that had left this world recently.  If you're not currently a member of AVSA, please consider joining soon( see Links) .  We need to revive the "golden age" of african violets and the AVSA.

April 21, 2010
Well I have some exciting news to share tonight.  As I mentioned earlier on this convention page, I took the judges exam under the direction of Meredith Hall from Texas.  Today I rec'd an email from Meredith announcing that I successfully passed the exam and my judges card will be in the mail!!!! Sweet!

Here are a few photos of plants presented by Ralph Robinson on his show table.  Knowing that these are plants he hybridized and grew I'm surprised at the variance between plants of the same variety.

Well I made it home from Raleigh and am inspired to groom the livin' daylights out of my plants.    As I match up the photos I took of plants (either on my phone or on my actual camera) I'll try to slot them in below the award they won in the show award list posted below.
Almost more than being about violets, this week was about the people that grow them and their shared love for the challenge and beauty.  2011 AVSA Show Chairman Rich Follett from Virginia quite appropriately, serenaded the membership at the installation dinner with a lovely acoustic version of "Oh Shenandoah" .  He rec'd a well-deserved standing ovation.
Prior to dinner, folks spent time getting in their hugs and goodbyes.  Below is Andrea Worrell with Bill Foster on left and Bill Price on right.

Elmer Godeny from LA and Jenny Daugereau from the AVSA home office.

Susan Hapner visits before dinner with AVSA President Ron Davidson and Jan Davidson of Jan's Workshop that makes most of the beautiful awards rosettes at AVSA shows.

April 18, 2010
Good morning.  It's early in the morning and everyone that hasn't already left the convention is busy packing their cars to head home.  There were a few corrections to the awards list I posted a few nights agao, but the list is now correct and certified by the committee. Here are a few more photos to feast uopn.

April 17, 2010
Well, the showroom has been broken down and plants all packed up.  Despite it being a week-long affair, this experience has flown by way too quickly.  I've met hundreds of people and honestly believe that I've made many new friends.
Tonight at the installation dinner, awards were given out to many men and women that have dedicated decades of their life to the promotion of violets.  As odd as it may seem to those of you not at the dinner banquet, it was a very emotional experience for all.  Bill Foster from TX was given the Hall of Fame Award to the audible sounds of gasps from the crowd in respect for being there to witness the moment.
The last day here has been one where the attendees, now all realizing it may indeed be another year before they see one another, were all scrambling to swap emails and addresses.  It's like the end of summer camp.

It's late, so I'll quickly add a few more images before I close, with promises to add more images for you all to enjoy after I return home.

I was VERY fortunate to win in the raffle a bag of 15 different varieties of trailer cuttings from the famed trailer grower Dr. Bill Price.  It even includes a crown off the plant that took BIS at the 2009 AVSA show in Reno along with several imported varieties.  I plan on treating those very kindly in hopes of all 15 becoming amazing plants in the future.

April 16, 2010

So much going on here, it's hard to find time to report on it all while I'm still in the midst of it all.  Today there were several workshops, affiliate meetings, the luncheon auction, and dinner with folks from various violet web groups.

I didn't have time to report much on the show yesterday.  I entered 9 classes and rec'd 8 blue and 1 red.  On a very funny note, all of my horticulture entries had tags attached to the plants I entered listing my name as a woman from Ohio!!!!!

The first time I encountered what I was sure was my plant and found a different name I convinced myself I was wrong.  By the time I came across the third plant and they all had Donna's name I suspected something was wrong.  Obviously the show committee corrected it by this morning, but I'm now answering to either my own name or 'Miss Donna' as Bill Foster has gone to calling me!!!!
Below is a photo of me and the actual Donna Vogelpohl from Ohio.

My violet mentor Andrea Worrell had set her sights on winning the Lyon's Collection class being offered for the first time this year....and of course DID IT!!  Way to go Ms. Andrea!

The class on making beaded violets went well this morning.  Laurene Jones did an excellent job at teaching and having all of our supplies ready to go.

Quick Note to Share

I just picked up a brief email from Joe Bruns that I thought I would share because I've heard so many folks ask about him and Jan during the week here.

Hi John,

I just want to let you know how very much I appreciate your blog on the Raleigh convention. I actually look forward to reading it every day, and it's at the top of my to-do list. I hope you're enjoying the convention. It's a great group of people.
I can't go to as many as I want because of working in a school. However, I retire in June, and Janice and I will be going to any convention within a reasonable driving distance. (Detroit for sure.) Have fun, and thanks again.

Joe

(This week the blog has broken its previous record for user activity.
As of 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening, 2135 separate visitors have checked in to see what's happening in Raleigh over the previous 24 hours!)

I attended an amazing presentation this morning put on by Rich Follett featuring the chimera hybridization by Stanley Ko from Hong Kong.  Now I only own perhaps two chimera violets, but the images of Mr. Ko's growing rooms and plants were total eye candy.  He spoke about his methods of growing for the hope of a chimera mutation.  I was fortunate enough to get a copy of the powerpoint from Rich and will share a few images here.  Thanks to both these men for an inspiring start to the day.

Holy cow I'm exhauseted today!  Woke up at 5:00 a.m. to start grooming plants to see if I would end up with anything to enter in Horticulture classes.  Suffice it to say that everything ended that session looking much balder than I would have hoped.  Getting your violets to bloom at the precise time is only the first part of the puzzle.  The other part is getting them to the show in and out of hotels without the plants suffering from all the moving and temperature shifts.
At 7:30 I went into my judging school class with the delightful Merideth Hall from TX.  Lecture and review lasted until we took a break @ noon.

During our one hour break I ran back to my room to start working on my designs for the show.  (I'm entering 4 classes in the design division.)  Back to the Judging class at 1:00 to take the exam.  Finished the exam and then returned to room to begin the back and forth from my room to the convention floor to bring all the basic components of the designs.  Naturally I had to trim all of my foamcore niches because the ones here were all a bit off the measurement stated in the program.
I swear I made at least 12 trips from my room to the convention room without anything to eat all day.  Look for me on Tyra Bank's next season of Americas Top Model!
I managed to weasel access to the Presidents reception for the Board of Directors reception at 4:30.  All the celebrities of the violet world were in attendance.

Here's Andrea and Bill Foster

Here I am with AVSA President Ron Davidson

Vladimir Kalgin and wife Tatiana from Russia

The reception was lots of fun and it allowed to meet so many of the people I see and read about in the AVM.  Thanks Ron!

After the reception was a revue of photos from the 2009 AVSA show in Reno.  Those photos lead into a quick slideshow of new introductions vendors would be introducing in the sale room.

We ended the night with the Q&A Growers Panel.  Richard Nicholas from TX was the moderator and the panel included left to right, Pat Hancock from Ohio, Bill Price from Canada, and Paul Kroll from New York.  It was a great way to end a wild day!

The weather here is great and the trees and azaleas are all in bloom.  My drive down from Chicago was a real treat.  I believe it got into the 80's here today.

I started the day by dropping in at Bluebird greenhouse in Apex, NC to visit and see their many african violets.  Other folks were already there including Ann Marie Keene and Lenny Winter.

After settling in briefly at the Hotel, I worked the registration desk which gave me the chance to meet lots of violet folks!

Here's a photo of me with Jenny and Ruth from the AVSA home office.

I assume most of you are familiar with the old comedy team of Laurel and Hardy shown below...

Well, here's the african violet version in this photo of me with Bill Price!!!!!!!  We'll work on matching hats and suits later!!!!!!!

Along with many others, I went out with AVSA to The Pit BBQ in Raleigh and was fortunate enough to have charming table mates from Canada, Idaho, and Utah.

Finally, along with the violets, orchids, and other gesneriads at Bluebird Greenhouse was this beautiful amaryllis plant.  More to report tomorrow!
